Innovative teenagers triumph in national CIMA Management Competition

02 July 2007

Year 12 students from the Cheltenham Ladies’ College, Gloucestershire and Year 13 students from Plymouth College, Devon have won the national CIMA (Chartered Institute of Management Accountants) Management Competition 2007, an annual event designed to award entrepreneurial students and to develop the business leaders of the future.

In the final, held at the Heritage Motor Centre, Gaydon, Warwickshire, eight teams from schools across the UK presented their recommendations to a judging panel of senior finance and business professionals.

The CIMA Management Competition, in partnership with Learnthings.co.uk, is open to all 16-18 year olds in schools and colleges in the UK. A team of up to four students act as consultants for a fictional company, analysing information and making recommendations based on their findings and then producing the conclusions in a formal business report.

Each team is given a case study scenario. This year it was based around a fictitious company called Butterfly Radio. Students were expected to research the history and background of the company and in particular to gain a thorough knowledge of the radio industry in which it operates. In the imaginary scenario, Butterfly had won the bid for a new digital radio station. The business report had to include whether they should use the new digital frequency to re-launch one of their existing stations or create a new station; if they should use the frequency to launch a commercial, free subscription-based service, and suggestions for three other revenue streams that Butterfly could start.

In joint second place were students from Year 12 at Ellesmere Port Catholic High School, Whitby and Year 13 at Hymers College, Hull. Third place was shared by students from Year 12 at Bancroft’s School, Essex and Year 13 Thomas Alleyne’s High School (Team 1), Staffordshire.

The winners were presented with their awards at the Heritage Motor Centre, Warwickshire, on 29 June 2007 by Mike Cronk, Controller Future Media, Technology and Distribution at BBC Global News.

Gordon Grant, CIMA President, said:

“I would like to congratulate all of the teams today for reaching the final of this challenging competition, which not only incorporates national curriculum guidelines but also provides an excellent introduction to the world of business, collaboration and entrepreneurship.”
