Registering as a student and applying for exemptions

We can only confirm your exemptions when you have registered with us and paid your registration and subscription fees.

Register as a student and apply for exemptions

Follow these steps to register as a CIMA student and apply for exemptions:

Step one - registration

Please see our getting started pages for directions on registering as a CIMA student.

Step two – check the exemptions you may be eligible for

See our exemptions database to find out whether you are entitled to any exemptions from CIMA's exams.

Step three – read our exemptions policy

Our exemptions policy will give you important information about exemptions requirements and the way that CIMA operates the exemptions process.

Step four – send your documents

You will need to send us copies* of your highest level educational certificates and transcripts to be considered for exemptions. These will need to include details of the subjects you studied and the marks you achieved.

All certificates and transcripts must be in English. If your documents were not issued in English, please have them translated and certified as 'An accurate translation of the original' by someone who is fluent in both languages. Please then send your original language documents and your certified translations to us.

Please do not send us original documents as we cannot guarantee that these will be returned to you.

Send your documents to us by fax at +44 (0) 870 787 9408, or post them to us at:

Step five – confirmation of receipt of your documents

Once we have received your documents, we will email you within 72 hours to confirm receipt. If you faxed your documents to us and don't receive confirmation in this time, please assume we have not received your fax and resend your documentation.

We do not send confirmation of receipt at weekends or on bank holidays, so please factor this time in when resending documents.

Step six - exemptions

When we have assessed your documents, we will email you with details of any exemptions awarded, or any further information required.

If you have been awarded exemptions, we will also write to you with details of your exemptions and your exemption fees. You will also be able to view these when you log into your MY CIMA student account.

You should allow 20 days for this assessment to be completed.

Step seven - accepting or waiving your exemptions

If you have been awarded exemptions, you need to be confident that you could have successfully attempted any papers that you may be exempt from, since the material will be built upon in the later stages of the qualification.

Please see our waiving exemptions page for information on how to do this and how to accept or waive your exemptions

Wait for written confirmation

Please wait until you have received written confirmation of your exemptions before you sign up for a CIMA study course.

If you learn that you are exempt from a subject after signing up for it, we will not accept liability for any course fees.

*From 01 April 2008, CIMA will no longer require certified copies of certificates and transcripts that are issued by the university when applying for exemptions. Any documents which have been translated into English will still be required to be certified as a 'accurate translation of the original'. Any documents submitted on or before 31 March 2008 must be certified. If CIMA receive documents on or before 31 March 2008 that are not certified, certified copies will be requested.
