Roger Bootle at CIMA Annual Conference

16 November 2004 041116

16 November 2004

Roger Bootle, one of the city's best known economists, will be addressing delegates at the CIMA Annual Conference 2004 in London on Thursday 25 November 2004.

Roger will give his perspective to review some of the challenges facing management accountants in the current and future economic environments. In addition to Roger, other leaders in their respective fields will be presenting on the following:

  • David Cafferty (Certified Fraud Examiner), Marta Andreasen (EC’s former Chief Accounting Officer), Detective Chief Superintendent Ken Farrow (Head of City of London Police Economic Crime Unit) and Paul Garlick QC will be discussing the prevention, detection and prosecution of financial crime and fraud
  • Robert Kirk (Professor of Financial Reporting at the University of Ulster ) and Geoffrey Whittington (Professor of Financial Accounting at Cambridge University ) will provide a realistic overview on the new International Accounting Standards (IAS) and highlighting some of the controversial areas and potential pitfalls
  • Professor Sir Andrew Likierman (the Treasury’s former Chief Accountant) will be addressing performance measurement issues
  • Eoin McGettigan (Executive Chairman of Musgrave UK and CEO of Londis) will be looking at the mergers and acquisitions market and questioning whether we should look for caution or for growth
  • Guy Outen (Chief Financial Officer of Shell Gas & Power) will examine the topic of “delivering on performance”.
  • CIMA’s Chief Executive Charles Tilley will be giving an overview on the new era in regulation and ethics, as well as focussing on CIMA’s future technological agenda

Charles Tilley, commenting on the forthcoming conference, said, “With effect from 2006 all member bodies of the International Federation of Accountants will be required to have in place a full policy on continuing professional development (CPD). CIMA’s conference this year has CPD as it’s major theme and the organisation is pleased to be able to offer attendees a detailed insight into some of the key issues affecting our industry.”

“One session that will be of particular interest is the one on financial fraud. We hope that by highlighting the issue and its associated dangers we can encourage closer working relationships between the police and management accountants. Ken Farrow, in his role as Head of the City of London Police Economic Crime Unit , reports that it’s business and the consumer that end up paying for financial crime through higher taxes, insurance premiums and prices. One estimate puts the weekly price of crime at a staggering £30 per household in the UK of which £22 comes from fraud.”
