Extreme-Accounting: Accountants' Wacky Races

08 June 2005

On Sunday 19 June 2005, six crack teams of Extreme-Accountants from major UK companies will be battling it out in the ultimate extreme driving challenge.  The Extreme-Accounting Corporate Challenge 2005 is part of the Warwickshire Heritage Motor Centre’s ‘Super Car Sunday’ including a hair-raising circuit with the Russ Swift Mini Display team.

Sponsored by Michael Page Finance, and in association with Jaguar and Land Rover, the intrepid E-As will face a number of challenges of skill and daring as they vie to outdo each other’s feats. They will have to cope with accelerated depreciation while putting a Moon Buggy through its paces on a grass course, use the High Low method to bag the most clay pigeons, avoid negative yield curves in the Land Rover off-road trial and aim for a bull position in the Extreme-Archery contest.

A new phenomenon taking the accounting industry by storm, Extreme-Accounting, sponsored by software company CODA and the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), was launched in November 2004 and has proved that accountants can be ‘flippin mental’, far removed from the usual staid image.

This is the very latest form of physical (and fiscal) endeavour to capture the imagination of a huge range of dedicated athletes right across the globe - injecting, as it does, all the thrills and adrenaline rush of book-keeping into the otherwise mundane world of extreme sports.  Better still, it is the only sport in the world where competitors are all amateurs AND experienced professionals!

Hilton Young, speaking on behalf of the sport’s co-sponsors, said: “’The Corporate Challenge’ follows a surge of interest in Extreme-Accounting, prompted by the award of the World Extreme-Accounting Championship to Keet Van Zyl of Cape Town, South Africa.  The sudden rise in popularity of the sport shows that accountants are no longer content to put up with the bean-counting image.  It’s high time that they come out from the back-office to take centre stage among the world’s other great athletes. Besides, they are better ‘suited’ than other sportspeople. Not only are accountants exciting, daring and well groomed, but they are hard-working and are prepared to take their work with them just about anywhere.”

Competing teams are made up of four accountancy professionals from the finance departments of HSBC, Cadbury Schweppes, Warwickshire County Council, bmi, Michael Page and Jaguar and Land Rover.  Most participants are CIMA members and students. The winning team will have the chance to ride in the passenger seat of one of the Russ Swift Minis as it performs daring stunts. A monetary donation will be made to the Juvenile Dyslexia Association following the event.
