CIMA issues annual review

CIMA has just launched its annual review at a very challenging time for the accountancy profession. The continuing demand for the CIMA qualification amongst employers is clearly demonstrated with membership (57,618) and student numbers (75,263) reaching an all time high in 2001.

Recent events have reinforced the need to restore public confidence in the profession and in auditing in particular. CIMA’s consistent commitment to independent regulation of the accountancy profession and the highest professional standards is a positive contribution towards this. Having a strong business focus, CIMA is also able to comment objectively on accounting issues such as the development of international accounting standards, and auditor independence, where CIMA has initiated a high level review.

CIMA has also stressed at the recent Treasury Select Committee the importance of quality input from non-executive directors, value adding management control systems based on effective internal audit and the need for the Financial Services Authority (FSA) to issue a letter to all directors of listed companies emphasising their primary role, as opposed to auditors, in ensuring good corporate governance.

Bruce Epsley, CIMA President, said: 'Looking to the future, we will continue to meet the demands placed on the accountancy profession to be true business professionals. 2002 will be a year when we raise the profile of our distinctive perspective on business and accounting issues and continuously develop and promote our unique qualification.'
